Rough Times for Organic Dairy Farmers
Produced at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. I reported, wrote and edited, as well as shot more than half of this piece.
In 2012, despite the pricey tags on the shelves at Whole Foods, organic dairy farmers were struggling to make ends meet, to the extent of being forced to sell off their herds. I met several different organic dairy farmers who were navigating the tricky, and very complex, retail supply chain. Knowing customers wouldn’t want to pay even more for organic milk, many believed it was the grocery stores that should take a smaller cut of organic dairy sales.
